The market takeaway is simple: the demand function hasn’t shifted from “build” to “digest” yet.
The software side: the market is repricing business models, not quarters
Contrast that with how investors reacted to Anthropic’s enterprise workflow tooling. Reuters described a wave of selling driven by fears that AI automation could undercut software revenue streams—especially where revenue is tied to per-user seats.
This matters because it’s not a standard “macro budgets are tight” story. It’s a unit economics story:
If an agent can accomplish the work of several seats, the “seat count” growth assumption can break.
If seat growth breaks, multiples compress—even if revenue doesn’t collapse tomorrow.

If performance-per-watt materially improves, hyperscalers can raise effective AI capacity without linear increases in power footprint.

Framework 1: Trade the spread, not the sermon
If you want exposure to the narrative without overfitting:
Watch SMH/IGV direction and trade in the direction of the spread.
If SMH continues to lead → the market still prefers hardware scarcity over software duration.
Framework 2: Use “confirmation windows” for software dip-buys
Software dip-buys work best when:
the group holds VWAP,
and breadth improves beyond a single name.
